Spain won the UEFA Nations League after overcoming a resilient Croatia 5-4 on penalties

Spain had the better chances in the match, but they could not break down a stubborn Croatian defence

Spain won the UEFA Nations League on Sunday after overcoming Croatia 5-4 on penalties. The match was a close affair, with both teams having chances to win in normal time. Spain had the better chances in the first half, with Dani Olmo coming close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions. Croatia grew into the game as the half went on, and they had a few chances of their own. The second half was a more even affair, with both teams having chances to win. Spain came close to breaking the deadlock late on, but they were denied by some excellent defending from Croatia. The match went to penalties, and Spain eventually prevailed thanks to a decisive save from goalkeeper Unai Simon. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning penalty for Spain. The victory is Spain's first major trophy since 2012, when they won the European Championship. It is also the first time they have won the Nations League. Croatia will be disappointed to have lost in the final, but they can be proud of their performance. They were the better team for much of the match, and they pushed Spain all the way.
